Supporting Our Troops
We as a family love to support our troops by being Pease Greeters. Hundreds of people gather at a local airport and cheer and shake hands of the troops as they come home or are sent overseas. There is a small ceremony where the veterans salute the troops and share a few words. “We the old warriors salute you the young warriors.” It’s very powerful and moving. When the soldiers re-board the plane they are given lots of goodies. It’s such a wonderful way for me to teach my kids not only to recognize the service of others, but to realize that doing something small (greeting troops) can be a big deal. Well, today they applauded Aidan. No kidding. The plane was late so I took some time to walk with Aidan. Each step for Aidan is work. People started to encourage him by saying, “great job young man.” Then the applause started. It was joyful and thunderous. Then he was given a star from a flag, which is a gift given to all the soldiers. Because the troops land here, the airport hallway is appropriately called Hero’s Walk. The making of a hero starts with one step.
