Kill Your TV
We killed our TV when Liam was born 11 years ago. I have to say, without a doubt, it was the best parenting decision we ever made. We raised a reader who knows how to engage himself creatively and constructively with the world. Obviously that’s possible to do with a TV but I think we made our own lives easier. It was also the best marriage decision we’ve made. Well, maybe not the best. Those weekends away have been paramount as well. We go to bed earlier and at the same time so we have those last few moments of the day together.
Here’s the challenge now. We have a fabulous computer with a big screen that is basically now a TV. YaYa Jen loves to call out me and my sister, who also doesn’t have a TV, when we get all high and mighty with the no TV bit. We’re just Hulu addicts instead. Yes, Becca, I said we. You’re sinking in this ship with me. We may have been reasonable users at first (do all addicts say that?) but TV has invaded once again. So, this week, in an effort to reboot our brains, get all zen and clean, and get grounded again as a family after our hospital stay, we’re killing electronics. No computer and no ipod touch for a week. We’ve agreed, some quite reluctantly, to check email but that’s it.
If you are getting the shakes thinking of not reading my blog for a week, you need real help or a life. Second, I’ve updated my blog roll. Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to go without screen time as well. Good luck with that!
