I’m Thankful for Friends
One of my greatest fears in raising Aidan has been that he won’t have friends. Think about who your friends are. They aren’t paid to spend time with you. They are usually in a similar age bracket. They have similar interests or experiences. Aidan has wonderful and talented adults in his life who genuinely care about him. The problem is, they’re adults. The kids in Aidan’s class have always responded well to him. He has three especially important friends who I hope will always be part of his life.
Kayla has been in Sunday School with Aidan from the beginning. She was the first person to invite him to a birthday party. This I will never forget. I cried big sloppy tears because it gave me so much hope. We skipped therapy and had a blast with other 4 year olds. Kayla also came to Aidan’s very first Special Olympics Meet wearing a “Go Aidan” t-shirt. She never needs assistance to talk to Aidan at church and doesn’t hesitate to tell me what Aidan is thinking. Her boldness and loving acceptance of Aidan is a gift to me.
Owen is a new friend this year. He’s in Aidan’s 4th grade classroom and they ride the bus together. Aidan always turns to see Owen as he gets on the bus because he knows he’ll be greeted with a smile and a hello. When I get Aidan off the bus, it is a treat for me to hear from Owen little tidbits about Aidan’s day.Anthony is my new hero. Anthony was in Kindergarten and First Grade with Aidan and now has a lunch group with him. Anthony has shown himself to be a great friend from day one. He would send his drawings home with Aidan, tell me about Aidan’s progress when he saw me at school, and find ways to be helpful to him. Anthony is also very comfortable with Aidan. When Aidan has wet hands, Anthony knows how to appropriately ask for a cloth to wipe them. He doesn’t mind when Aidan grabs him into a choke hold to be affectionate. And here’s why Anthony is my new hero – he told me recently that he believes Aidan can do things we don’t even know about. I love those high expectations. I wonder what Anthony would say are Aidan’s special powers?
