Thank-you to Reader Meredith for asking where to find support. Two words – OTHER PARENTS!!! People who have been through the system are the ones who can navigate it best. I still say my biggest gift when Aidan came home from the hospital was a speech therapist who was also the mom of a child with a disability. She was the first to tell me who to call for what. That being said, the internet can also be helpful, if not overwhelming. If you are in the thick of it with your child, remember that people love to help and don’t always know how. Computer searches are a great task to give a friend. Also, every state is required to have a federally funded parent information center. They address a wide variety of parenting issues. They know who provides what services and can direct you to them. Here are some local ones:
And a national directoryfor everyone else.
They are usually my first call. This question makes a most important point – ask for help.
