As You Become
For my Bowdoin bound boy in honor of Bowdoin One Day.
I hope you stay curious
that your brainiac wheels keep turning, wondering, asking questions about the world around you and the topics before you
that you spend hours with your nose in a book stretching your mind, and hours in conversation stretching it more.
I hope you remember when you tank a test that your work ethic is more important than the letter on the paper, that marks are not the measure of a man.
I want you to make mistakes
to boldly screw up, to live a story
that in your quest to follow my advice and go live your life, you take a few wrong turns along the way.
Some adventures will turn out as grand as expected, but let some be footnotes because even those matter.
I want you to set goals, to meet most of them, and to fall short sometimes, pushing you in a different direction.
I wish for you crazy love
that someone special makes you giddy, occupies your thoughts beyond reason, and confounds you
that your heart widens, feels a little scared and excited at the same time.
I wish for you a broken heart, one that hurts and mends and feels fuller for the moment that was.
I long for good solid friendships
born of late nights and laughter and perhaps a little trouble making
people who don’t miss your wit through your introverted tendencies.
Let them pull you out of your comfort zone as that is where all the best stuff happens and know that in the end it is kindness that matters
kindness and showing up
and also making memories.
And in all of this I hope you remember
how abundantly you are loved.
You may still roll your eyes at this, but know that we at home, along with your big and wild extended family, are cheering in the front row watching and waiting as you become.
