Anniversary (and countdown to another wedding)
This September was our 15th anniversary. We needed a long weekend away to celebrate. Overnights are too short because I take way too long to decompress. We found a lovely B+B and my Dad agreed to take the kids. Then he called to say the Undercover Princess just announced she was getting married that same weekend, which was in fact, three weeks away. She is family so his attendance was necessary. I had to dig way deep down to find my better self and be happy for her. Small pity party later and I was. We couldn’t work alternative logistics for that weekend. We couldn’t even find a sitter so we could have dinner out.
I was perhaps a bit sulky, which put Garreth on a mission. So on our anniversary, Garreth prepared dinner and served it by candlelight on the deck he built me. Well, first he grew the food. There’s a lot of love right there. I noticed he was grilling something. I’ll eat food that’s grilled but certainly can’t get excited about it because it’s probably chicken, and what’s so exciting about that. He brings my dinner plate over with a beautiful slab of grilled swordfish and I burst into tears. The swordfish was Garreth’s way of saying he remembered. He remembered the meal we had on our honeymoon on the beach where we were almost delightfully forgotten. He remembered that I had it several other times because I’m a picky and suspicious eater. He remembered how I love love love fresh fish and would never eat it when we were landlocked in the midwest. He forgets a lot of other mundane details, but this one, he remembered. I love him for that.
We celebrated 15 years as Brandon and the Undercover Princess were just starting out and I love how we celebrated. I love that we each got second chances, us to go away for long weekend and them to celebrate with family next week. So Brandon, welcome to the family and take this lesson from a seasoned husband……pay attention, stay the course, and remember.
